Laser Nail Fungus Treatment
How does it work?
The Laser Genesis procedure is a clinically proven safe and effective way to clear the toenail without drug therapy. The laser light works by killing the fungus as it penetrates deep through the nail and into the surrounding area.
What can I expect during and after the treatment?
There is virtually no pain during the office procedure, only a warm sensation from the laser light. There are no needles, incisions and no damage to the treated skin. There is also no downtime from regular activities or exercise after the treatment and one can put their regular shoes back on immediately after the treatment.
Only toenails infected with fungus are treated with the laser. The treatments range from 15-35 minutes depending on the number of toenails requiring treatment and if reducing the thickness of the nails is needed before the treatment can begin. There is no downtime from regular activities or exercise after the treatment and one can put their regular shoes back on immediately after the treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
Most only need two twenty-minute treatments to start seeing clear nail growth but those with severe fungal infections often need a second treatment. Clinical trials have shown lasers to be 88% effective against nail fungus. A 100% guarantee is not possible, as with all medical procedures. Reinfection can occur since fungus is present in our environment.
Does my health insurance cover this procedure?
Laser nail fungus treatment is not covered by insurance companies, however treatments are generally affordable and preferable for those seeking an alternative to prescription medication and their potential liver risks.
How many treatments will I need?
Often, patients find that one or two treatments are sufficient. However, the number of treatments necessary depends on the number, color, and size of the vessels being treated. Since individual results vary, we advise you to call us for a consultation.
Do the treatments hurt?
Most patients experience a stinging sensation as the pulses of energy are delivered through the hand piece. Although no local anesthesia or pain medication is typically required, many patients opt to use a topical anesthetic prior to treatment. Following the treatment, the pain is minimal to nonexistent.
What happens after the treatment?
Following your treatment, some redness or bruising may occur. When larger veins are treated, a tan or brownish pigment may persist for a few weeks or months following treatment. Patients who have leg vein treatments may be advised to wear support hose for a short period of time.
What are the possible side effects?
Although many patients report few if any side effects, those most commonly noticed are slight reddening and local swelling of the skin. These effects typically last for less than 24 hours. Some patients may experience bruising and, in rare instances, blistering may occur. During your consultation we can give you the overall benefits and risks of treatment.
Are there any restrictions on my activity after treatment?
Patients generally resume most normal activities immediately. However, it is recommended that you avoid vigorous activities such as strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours after treatment. The use of sunscreen is recommended on any treated areas exposed to the sun. As always, it is a good idea to limit your sun exposure.
When will I see results?
Most patients find that the majority of the treated veins have shown significant improvement within two to six weeks of treatment. However, your final results may not be apparent for several months. Over time, it is possible for new veins to appear, but these too can be removed through Laser Vein Therapy.
